Kawaguchi Nine-Shrine Pilgrimage and Magatama Tour

Note In the city of Kawaguchi there are many shrines, but visiting the nine most important ones is known as the Nine-Shrine Pilgrimage. Connecting the nine shrines with a line forms the shape of a magatama as if it were enshrined to encircle and protect Kawaguchi. Magatamas are curved, comma-shaped beads. They have been highly revered since ancient times, serving both as ritual objects and ornaments. They hold such significance that they are included as one of the three sacred treasures respectfully passed down with each imperial era in Japan. While there are various interpretations, the shape of a magatama is often seen as a symbol of life, resembling the form of a fetus or a soul. By visiting the nine shrines and forming the shape of a magatama, worshippers believe they can achieve purification and renewal of life through the divine protection of the nine shrines.
It is said that by visiting the nine shrines in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction starting from any shrine and returning to the first shrine, you can receive blessings. This practice is known as the Magatama Meguri, or Magatama Tour.
